I saw a couple of things last week that made me think that maybe people are beginning to find ways to surpass Google. The first are Alexa’s new webservices , an open platform with a straightforward pricing model for any developer who wants to build a search engine in short time. A step towards the commoditization of search? The second was a demo of a new search engine called vast.com (stealth mode). What impressed me about Vast is that they’ve built a complete search engine from scratch with a small team (~6 people) and they’re creating a search index that seems very smart and forward thinking (I hope to talk about it more soon).
